Cash crunch fall-out: Non-bank payment players to witness huge growth, says ASSOCHAM Paper

One of the immediate fall outs of the demonitisation of high value notes would be a mushrooming growth in the number of non-bank players like Paytm and Free charge into the payment business, as more and more retailers in the goods and service value chain would be compelled to shift to non-cash modes for customer transactions, an ASSOCHAM Paper has said.

These players engaged into the business known as the pre-paid payment instruments (PPI) work as mobile and digital wallets.  While as many as 45 PPI players have started offering services, it is only a handful of operators which have been aggressively ramping up and marketing their operations.

“However, the demonitisation has come about as a big opportunity for them. It is not only during this immediate cash crisis period that the PPIs would see a huge growth, but going forward also, the system would penetrate into the very small kirana stores as well; it would not be a surprise if well-run road side dhabas also start accepting bills through mobile wallet players,” said ASSOCHAM Secretary General Mr D S Rawat.

Offering the stored value service to the customers, the non-bank PPI issuers are allowed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to enable transactions for purchase of goods and services besides remitting payments out of the mobile wallets. The wallet-to-wallet transactions would also see a big growth.

“Given the thrust being given by the government to move towards the less-cash economy, the private sector PPIs is expected to invest lot more in product innovation and expand the reach through roping in both the customers and the merchants. Needless to say, at the merchants level a lot of sensitization, training and cyber security would be required,” the chamber said.

These players are using the increasing mobile density to offer the services through the hand set.  Besides, the PPIs, other electronic transactions and services devices would be offered aggressively even by the banks, who are presently bearing the brunt of cash swapping, it said.

The banks would offer on an enhanced scale mobile banking services through SMS, USSD (Unstructured Supplementary Services Data) and applications (Apps).  Presently, according to RBI data, as many as 67 banks are offering mobile services to 120 million customers. “This number is going to grow significantly,” the ASSOCHAM said.

With the launch of Unified Payments Interface (UPI customers can provide only a registered virtual address instead of details of bank accounts for making/receiving payments “However, the banks must use the App based UPI more aggressively as it can really be a game changer,” Mr Rawat said.

Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific announced the launch of an originally created public service announcement

In support of an ongoing commitment to save the world’s most endangered species, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific announced the launch of an originally created public service announcement. Narrated by actor Edward Norton, the public service announcement will air on Discovery’s channels across Asia Pacific to help raise awareness and stem the illegal trade of endangered species products.

Discovery first revealed this public service announcement at the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in September. It was part of a multiplatform campaign to raise awareness and reduce demand for illegally sold animal products. The call is for global communities to be more informed when making purchases. Ignorant buying unknowingly fuels the illegal wildlife trade as the desire to own something rare and unusual – from souvenirs and novelties to trinkets and fashion – has resulted in the poaching, slaughter and decimation of many animal species.

For the airing of the PSA in Africa and Asia Pacific, Discovery is partnering with United Nations (UN) Environment and the Wild for Life campaign, which launched in May 2016. #WildforLife aims to mobilise millions of people to participate in the process of making commitments and taking action against illegal wildlife trade.

Erik Solheim, Head of UN Environment, said, “As we are all well aware, the illegal trade in wildlife is pushing species to the brink of extinction. We urgently need to change attitudes and mobilize people to stop this tragedy. But crucially, we also need the next generation to be more responsible consumers and caring custodians. To accomplish this, we need to join forces across public and private sectors. That’s why we’re so pleased to work with Discovery Communications in efforts to halt the illegal trade in wildlife. The trade is accelerating the destruction of our natural world, but we can stop it together.”

Arthur Bastings, President and Managing Director, Discovery Networks Asia-Pacific said, “Discovery is a purpose-driven company and we have been at the forefront of efforts to raise awareness of species conservation for over 30 years. Protecting and showcasing the beauty that our planet has to offer is deeply important to us and we are thrilled to be able to share this important message with audiences in Asia. The support of our partners in this effort has been invaluable and we are hopeful that together we can help put an end to this global issue.”

Ted Osius, the U.S. Ambassador to Vietnam said, “The Hanoi Conference on Illegal Wildlife Trade is an opportunity for the global community to worktogether to implement solutions to address wildlife trafficking. By hosting this conference, the Vietnamese Government is engaging world leaders, non-government organisations and the private sector to collectively make a positive difference for the planet.”

According to the Wildlife Conservation Society, wildlife trafficking today is estimated to be the fourth largest illegal trade in the world after drugs, human, and weapons trafficking, worth some US$19 billion annually (excluding fish and timber).

Discovery presents GOLD RUSH

gold flakes, Gold Rush, Discovery.jpg

Since antiquity, Gold has been the most cherished metal known to mankind. India’s passion for the yellow metal remains unparalleled.  While an approximate 30% of world’s gold production is consumed by Indians; it produces only a fraction of its consumption and is the largest importer of Gold.

Gold mining has been a risky business – where one wrong move can cost a crew millions of dollars. Powered by magnetic storytelling and compelling characters, Discovery brings its highly acclaimed series GOLD RUSH where the miners take on greater risks in hopes of finding more gold than ever before. But not every gamble always pans out with massive profits.

With a mix of high-stakes drama and gripping story, GOLD RUSH will air every Tuesday at 10 PM starting November 15.

Returning from a record-breaking gold mining season is 21-year-old miner Parker Schnabel. The series begins with a sad start for Parker as he has lost his beloved grandfather, mentor and an expert miner – John Schnabel. In this reality series, Parker who attains the leadership role, will be tested more than ever as he navigates the many changes in his life. This year, he makes his biggest operational investment by ordering a customized $600,000 washplant. But will it be enough to beat out his rival Todd Hoffman? Parker’s gold mining plan is to go lean and mean on expenses in an attempt to make his biggest profit yet.

Meanwhile, the competitor Todd Hoffman takes the biggest gamble of his life, turning his back on the Klondike region and moving his entire operation to Oregon (US). Todd is on a quest for huge gold nuggets at the High Bar mine, located high up in the mountains. It’s a bold move – with Todd so confident that he sets an ambitious 5,000 ounce goal – more than 2,000 ounces than his best-ever total in the previous seasons of Gold Rush. But with the first Oregon clean ups way below expectations, Todd begins to wonder if he’s made a massive mistake. Could this season mark the end of the Hoffman crew?

In this season of Gold Rush, legendary Klondike miner Tony Beets, aka “The Viking,” is back and doubling down by investing $2 million in resurrecting a second historic gold dredge – twice as big as his first.  Last year, people thought he was crazy for investing in his first ancient dredge. But Tony is hoping that once again he can accomplish the impossible. But first, he must transport the 75-year-old abandoned dredge from a remote spot 150 miles down-river. He’ll need his family to step up to the plate and run the rest of his gold-mining empire. But when his first dredge sinks within days, Tony’s son, Kevin, finds himself in his father’s firing line.

In advance of the new season of GOLD RUSH, beginning November 15, Discovery viewers can binge on prior seasons with a special ‘Story So Far’ at 10 PM.

This year’s Gold Rush season is filled with the same excitement, as miners have upped the ante by setting up higher goals. This season the miners will take on even greater risks in hopes of finding more gold than ever before.

Gold Trivia:

  1. Amongst the top gold producing countries in the world, China is in the lead in first place followed by Australia, Russia in third and United States holding fourth place.
  2. Canada’s Barrick Gold Corp. (TSE:ABX) holds first place in global ranking in gold production.
  3. Gold is one of the most recycled materials in the world. Amazingly gold recycling accounts for one third of the total production.
  4. United States tops the reported official holdings in the world. (source: IMF IFS; World Gold Council, Dec 2015).  US holds 8,133.5 tonnes of Gold, whereas India ranks at no. 11 with 557.7 tonnes.
  5. In India, besides fascination for gold jewellery, it is considered the most pious metal. This charm is validated by the fact that India is the biggest importer of gold today.
  6. USA’s fascination with Gold Mining dates back to 1848 when the famous California Gold Rush happened. Miners extracted more than 750,000 pounds of gold during the California Gold Rush.
  7. ‘Klondike’ marks the story of the last great Gold Rush in history. In 1897 two friends made the perilous journey through North American wilderness to the Klondike boom town Dawson City, “The Paris of the North”, which was  filled with murders, revenge, riches and redemption.
  8. Gold mining always catches the attention of individuals, probably that’s the reason Discovery’s popular series Gold Rush has been the highest rated show not only in US but across the world.

Catch all the action of Discovery’s popular series GOLD RUSH every Tuesday at 10 PM.
